Caló

If you read my "About" section, you'd know that I'm a food enthusiast and self-proclaimed food and restaurant critic.

So.. I figured I'd share my latest review with you all!

Recently, I tried El Segundo hotspot Caló and was pleasantly surprised! I'm usually not too keen on the whole modern Mexican thing, because the flavor usually disappoints (unless it's Javier's).

They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, PLUS a creamy black bean dip, which had the right amount of spice and heat. It was a perfect combination.

The Reposado Margarita was simultaneously sweet and tart - but not enough to overpower the taste of the actual tequila. And I loooove my tequila, so that was a winner! Also a plus that it was so smooth- which could be considered dangerous, depending on how many you order.

Growing up in Cali, eating avocados was a pretty normal occurrence, even from a young age. So, when I read that the guacamole was made fresh to order, I had to get it! Perfect amount of acidity and salt- which isn't always easy to do!

Next, I went with the Shrimp Taquitos on the appetizer menu. Now those were mmm mmm good! Jumbo shrimp is wrapped in a tortilla for a crunchy, even bite. The taquitos were topped with a fresh pico de gallo and shredded cheese, served with a smoky, chipotle aioli on the side. Dipping the taquito in the aioli made for the perfect bite.

If I have any complaint, it's that the entrée could've been better.

I ordered the Short-Rib Enchiladas and the description had me so excited! But, when I got the meal I was a little disappointed. The actual meat inside of the enchiladas was pretty good, though it could've used some salt.

But it didn't feel like an enchilada.

It almost seemed like the chef just rolled up the meat inside of the tortilla and poured some sauce on top, without baking it. I've eaten enchiladas alllllllll of my life (thanks, Grandma Susan), and I know the difference between a baked one and a thrown together one. When you bake the enchiladas, the flavor actually comes together more completely. This didn't taste completed. Although, the crispy fried onions on top of the enchiladas did give way to some good texture (I love a good crunch).

All in all- I would return to Caló and just opt for a different entrée.

The experience warrants a 4/5 for me!
